Taj Mahal, Agra, India

One of the 7 Wonders of the World, the Taj Mahal was commissioned by emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal means Crown of the Palace.

It appears pink in the morning, white in the day and changes its color to golden in the moon light.

It is said that the Shah had his minions cut off the hands of the Taj Mahal’s architect and his workers after the structure was completed, ensuring they would never build another of its kind.

Built in 1653 is was estimated to have costed around 32 million rupees at that time, which would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees ($827 million US) today. I was lucky to have gotten in on 1 of the 2 days of the year for free! It was World Heritage day so I got to bypass the 1000 rupee entry fee (about $15.50 US). The other day you can get in for free is the Shah’s wife’s birthday.

We had our very own guide Raj for a tour of the Taj.

Beautiful sunset view of the Taj Mahal.
